Detroit Company Chosen for DOT Safe Lithium (Ion) Battery Packaging System Funding

DETROIT, Michigan USA – June 9, 2021 – Energy Storage Safety Products International, LLC (ESSPI), a Detroit-based lithium battery safety company, has been awarded a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to continue research and design activities for the development of safe battery packaging technologies. ESSPI’s innovative battery transport and storage technology is called Battery Logistics Integrated Safety System (BLISS). The goal of the BLISS project is to develop specialized containers that provide safe, efficient solutions for the transport and storage of batteries. ESSPI has partnered with the University of Texas Fire Research Group (Austin, TX), Altect (Austin, TX), and Centrepolis (Southfield, MI) to complete fire materials characterization studies and system design activities as part of the SBIR.

While lithium (ion) and other battery technologies used in electric vehicles, consumer products and energy storage systems are generally safe and offer enormous benefits, they do have a downside… they are subject to a growing fire and explosion concern. There have been a number of recent fire events around the world that have raised red-flags regarding lithium (ion) battery safety, certainly in the logistics process.

Ron Butler, ESSPI’s Chief Executive Officer said, “We understand the risks that come with lithium (ion) batteries. We also understand that these battery technologies offer great benefit to our society and are, generally, safe. Our goal is to make sure we can protect our industry partners, their clients and the consumer at every stage of the battery life cycle. The reality is that it only takes one or two high-profile failures to give these outstanding, essential technologies a bad name”.

“We are witnessing tens of billions of dollars being invested in the rapid growth of the electric vehicle and consumer electronics industries, with thousands of jobs being created. This growth, and continued public confidence in battery technologies, rests on meeting the challenge of safely managing lithium (ion) battery supply chains. Handling billions of batteries world-wide requires novel, dedicated container systems that increase safety and dramatically lower risk. With this DOT support, the BLISS system will take shape and provide a safer, more efficient means to handle batteries and minimize the risk to the public, industry and our transportation system”, said Dennis Atkinson, Chief Engineer at ESSPI.

A representative from the world’s leading battery manufacturer said, “As the largest battery manufacturer in North America, with a global customer base, we have a strong interest in a dedicated, fully monitored EV battery container.”
