Flood Safety Awareness Campaign Underway

National Flood Insurance Program Available to the Public.

The Utah Division of Emergency Management is promoting the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for homeowners in flood-prone areas. This program is designed to assist anyone who could be affected by floods and flood damages, helping them recover quickly after a natural disaster. The Division of Emergency Management (DEM) is seeking earned media opportunities for stories, articles, interviews, and other content to educate homeowners regarding this program.

NFIP is a nationwide initiative established in 1968 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. DEM oversees this program within the state of Utah and is running a campaign associated with the program from June 13 to July 8. Flood damage has devastated many communities in Utah, and due to the unpredictability of these disasters, many affected do not have insurance coverage for the damages.

Most insurance companies offer coverage for flood damage; however, it is not typically included in homeowners insurance policies. The NFIP says that “flood insurance can be the difference between recovery and financial devastation.” DEM recommends that homeowners consider coverage for flood damage even if their area has not been prone to flooding.

Utah homeowners can inquire with their local insurance agents. Or they can go to floodsmart.gov for information on Utah NFIP policies and rates. You can find more information at floodsmart.gov. Representatives from DEM are available for interviews and other appearances to educate the public on this program and the benefits of flood insurance.
