The New Sensor-Infused Insert and First IoT Wheelchair Cushion, Sensoria® Mat Launches Today on Kickstarter

Sensoria® Mat aims to help wheelchair users reduce the risk of ulceration and improve their overall health and quality of life.  The best way to prevent ulcers is to regularly change positions and perform pressure relief activities multiple times throughout the day.  Sensoria® Mat combines textile pressure sensors, artificial intelligence algorithms and its mobile app to alert the user when it is time to change positions and guides them on executing effective pressure relief activities.

A pressure injury or sore is unfortunately a very common complication after a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and can have devastating effects.  These injuries can develop when pressure is applied to the skin for extended periods of time.  This continuous pressure reduces blood flow to the skin and underlying tissues, resulting in cell injury and in some cases the related complications can lead to death. Nearly 80% of people with SCI will experience at least one pressure injury in their lifetime.  The great news, however, is that most of them are preventable.

Each Sensoria® Mat is hand-made, and is composed of two parts. First, a cushion is carefully crafted with skin refreshing gel and comfortable memory foam paired with a proprietary mat insert that is infused with soft textile pressure sensors. The second component, Sensoria® Core, is a Bluetooth Smart rechargeable, miniaturized IoT hub device that snaps into the insert to collect pressure relief monitoring data and helps wheelchair users maintain their daily rehab routine, stay healthy and reduce risk of ulceration.
