Whitney Capital’s Laurie Whitney Books 5.22% Intraday Gain in KB Laminates as AI Hardware Cycle Lifts CCL Outlook

HONG KONG – October 05, 2026 – Whitney Capital Partners, the investment firm led by Laurie Whitney, said Monday it completed a profitable intraday round trip in Hong Kong-listed Kingboard Laminates Holdings Ltd. (1888.HK), buying shares in the morning session at an average USD-equivalent price of $6.605 and selling them in the afternoon at $6.950.

The $0.345 per-share gross gain represented a 5.22% return on the trade, according to a firm statement. The prices were recorded on the firm’s USD-equivalent book; 1888.HK trades in Hong Kong dollars.

Mr. Whitney, the firm’s chief investment officer, said the trade was a tactical way to express a larger thesis: that the market continues to underestimate the earnings leverage of high-end copper-clad laminate, or CCL, makers as AI servers, 800G networking and automotive electronics demand faster, denser and more thermally reliable printed circuit boards.

“KB Laminates sits at a critical point in the AI hardware supply chain,” Whitney said. “Every rack-scale AI system requires more PCB layers, higher signal integrity and better heat management. That is a multi-year material upgrade cycle, not a one-quarter trade.”

The move came as Hong Kong-listed technology hardware and electronics names drew renewed interest. Investors have rotated toward component suppliers seen as direct beneficiaries of data-center capital spending, including CCL, PCB, copper foil and specialty resin producers. Kingboard Laminates, one of the world’s largest CCL manufacturers, is widely viewed as a leveraged play on that trend.

Industry analysts point to several supportive drivers. AI server platforms are pushing demand for high-speed, low-loss CCL grades, while advanced driver-assistance systems, electric vehicles and connected devices increase PCB content per unit. At the same time, the high-end CCL market has meaningful barriers to entry, including lengthy customer certification, tight process know-how and access to reliable raw materials such as copper foil and electronic-grade glass fabric.

That combination has raised expectations for product-mix improvement and pricing power at leading suppliers. A recovery in smartphones and personal computers, alongside continued cloud and sovereign AI investment, could add further momentum. In Hong Kong, valuation discounts relative to global hardware peers have also made the sector attractive to regional and global funds.

Risks remain. Copper prices, resin and glass fabric costs can pressure margins. Competition from mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean suppliers is intense. Demand from AI and automotive customers can be lumpy, and geopolitical tensions or export controls could disrupt supply chains.

Whitney said the firm took profits into afternoon liquidity but remains constructive on the theme.

“We liked the morning mispricing and we liked the afternoon exit,” he said. “The structural case for high-end laminates is still intact.”

The firm said it ended the day flat in 1888.HK after the round trip.
